It is that time of year when everyone in Ecuador celebrates the Spanish foundation of Quito. It is a very big deal and people party all over the city. The festival is a little weird, because on some level, it is distinguished by the people celebrating their “spanishness”.
There are bull fights where people people dress up in very nice clothes, drink sherry from wine skins, and generally act rich and fancy. Very weird indeed.
Something, not Spanish, about the fiesta is the chiva. A Chiva is an open air bus where there is band and people load up onto the bus, get wasted and ride all around town, yelling and having fun. In my time here I have yet to do one, and I will not be disappointed if I miss this cultural opportunity.
