Andean Tension

Many of you know about the rising tension in the Andean region right now.  Just for a quick recap, lets look at what is going on.  The Columbian government sponsored a military excursion into the country of Ecuador to kill one of the FARC leaders.  His name is Raul Reyes, and we are pretty sure the campaign was successful in its stated goal.    The problem was Columbia did not ask Ecuador if they could bring the military into their country.

Understandably, the Ecuadorean President Rapheal Correa was a tad more than pissed at this oversight.    His ally, President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, told Columbia that if they try any horse shit like that in his country, they would be looking down the barrel of a gun when they crossed the border.

Ecuador and Venezuela dropped diplomatic ties with the fine upstanding nation of Columbia.   Well the world was a little pissed at Columbia for acting like this, but then Columbians pulled out a document they found on a computer.  Hmm, that sounds a familiar.  Now this computer generated document, something that looks like it came off a typewriter, is the justification for a military insurrection into Iraq.  I guess the FARC type their communiqués first, scan them, and email them during their stays in the in the Columbian/Ecuadorian jungles.

This event happened during an interesting set of circumstances.  The new Ecuadorian constitution is due in about 2 weeks, so a lot of legislation in is being debated, passed, and rewritten.  Last week we finally saw the official law to ban all foreign military bases from Ecuadorian soil.    There has been a lot of talk about this, since the United States has a large base in Manta, Ecuador.  Then, without warning, Columbia is pushing her way into sweet old Ecuador.
